You only have one mom, and whilst it’s natural to clash from time to time, spending quality time is one of the most beautiful and precious things you can do together. Whether it’s a quick weekend away within the same country you live, or a longer two weeks’ stint in a hot, exotic country, the key thing is to bond, enjoy each other’s company, and work on your relationship.

Despite this, there is an age difference, and there are differences in outlook, so how can you make a vacation with your mom smooth, enjoyable, and one to remember for fantastic reasons?

Compromise

When it comes to picking a destination, you’re going to have a compromise a little. Unless you have a clubbing mom, she isn’t going to want to head to the neon lights of Ibiza for a spot of super-clubbing action, so maybe head somewhere a little calmer, with natural sights you can both enjoy. Come up with a list and whittle it down between you, so you both have an equal say. The best suggestion is to go somewhere neither of you have been before, so you can really experience something new and exciting together.

Pick activities you will both enjoy

Similarly, give some thought to activities that you both enjoy. Maybe a guided walk, or some day hikes could be a great choice of activity, to see the scenery, talk, work on your bond, and most importantly, laugh! Throw in some fun, once in a lifetime activities too, maybe a jeep safari trip into the forests of your destination, or horse riding – something you’ll both remember for years to come.

Stay calm and embrace it

There might come a time during your break, whether long or small, where your mom becomes, well, like your mom, and decides to tell you what to do. Stay calm, breathe, remember you are an adult now, and don’t be tempted to kick off like a small child! Simply laugh, make a joke about it, and move on. This is a fantastic opportunity to spend quality time with the most important woman in your life – embrace it and breathe through the difficulties.

Think fun

Whilst this is a bonding experience, remember to have fun! Like we mentioned with activities, factor in fun time, do something silly, laugh at nothing, and enjoy the time just being together. On a trip with my mom a few years ago we went to a Bingo night together! This turned out to be a great idea. This flipped on the head an activity that one would normally link to the elderly, yet my mom and I basically acted like children throughout the entire time! We laughed so much, and I have fantastic memories of that holiday, even though it was simply a caravan weekend away. It’s all about laughter and memories you can remember in years to come.

Capture it!

You’ve probably been on countless travels with your friends, but have you been on that many with your mom? In that case, photograph it, and get lots of you together. This will give you both many fond memories of your holiday to look back on. Maybe choose the best one, frame it, and give it to your mom as a present on Mother’s Day 🙂
